My goal is for people to learn to do something new - because knowing how to do something new isn't always enough. The best way to learn is to practice, and when on-the-job training isn't an option, simulations are the next best thing.

Email Phishing Scams

My Roles: Instructional designer and eLearning developer.

Tools Used: Articulate Storyline 360

Course Information: This activity is from a course titled Digital Data Safety.

Objective: Learners will be able to recognize signs that an email may be a phishing scam and handle it appropriately.

Why This Works: First, learners review the warning signs to look for, then they are presented with an example phishing email and decide how to handle it. They experience intrinsic feedback by seeing the consequences (good or bad) of their choice.

Reflections: This activity could be improved upon by adding accessibility features such as an audio option and larger text. Also, to reinforce knowledge of the warning signs and next steps, this activity could be strengthened by adding additional examples of email messages (some phishing and some not) for learners to assess as phishing or safe and then select the best next step.
