Intrinsic feedback gives learners the opportunity to experience the consequences of their choices. Through decision-based learning, participants are presented with real-world situations. They must analyze information, evaluate options, and make informed decisions. Then, they receive feedback on the outcome of their choices.

Decision-Based Learning

Dress for Success

My Roles: Project manager, instructional designer, graphic designer, and eLearning developer.

Tools Used: Articulate Storyline 360, Adobe Stock, Adobe Photoshop, and eLearning Art.

Course Information: This activity is from a new employee orientation course.

Objective: This course is for temporary employees who may be assigned to various types of jobs. After learning the policy for dress and grooming, the learner will assess whether 15 outfits are appropriate for the workplace.

Why This Works: Participants must rely on higher-order thinking skills to decide which outfits are appropriate for work. When the learner indicates the outfit is not appropriate, they are prompted to choose which element of the outfit needs to be changed. Custom feedback is provided based on the learner's responses.

The dress and grooming policy for this organization isn't specific so the wording of the feedback was carefully chosen to not indicate a right or wrong answer. Instead, the avatar guide comments on whether she agrees or disagrees with the learner's choice and provides a rationale for her assessment.

Reflections: This course could be made more accessibility-friendly by adding audio and more descriptive alt text for the images.
