Make 10
My Roles: eLearning developer.
Tools Used: Articulate Storyline 360, Adobe sound effects
Course Information: This game is from a course titled Grade 3 Building Math Fluency: Addition and Subtraction.
Objective: Learners will demonstrate their knowledge of the Make 10 strategy by playing a bingo-style game.
Why This Works: Make 10 is a strategy that helps students learn to solve number sentences by rounding the first number up to its nearest 5 and the second number to the nearest 10. The game allows learners to test their knowledge of this strategy. Each equation has two possible answers: a Make 10 equation and a solution. Learners play the game until they cover four spaces in a row. Since each number sentence has two possible answers, learners can choose whether to answer with an equation or the solution. It tests both the learner's understanding of the strategy and how to use it. Learners must win the game before moving on.
Reflections: The look and feel of the course was designed by the SME. It could be designed in a more aesthetically pleasing and inviting manner. Also, because each number sentence has two possible answers, the same number sentences appear in the same order each time the game is played. If the number sentence had only one answer, it could have been designed to draw from a question bank to offer a different experience each time the game is played.
